Opening Your Church’s Doors to the Community
Hinges: Opening Your Church’s Doors to the Community is a book written by Terry Tieman, David Born, and Dwight Marable. Here is the start of the first chapter:
In the opening scene of the movie Get Smart, Maxwell Smart, played by Steve Carrell, walks through a series of mechanical doors to accomplish his mission. As soon as he passes through a door, it slams shut behind him, cutting off the path. As we look at the church landscape in America, we can see a tragically similar situation. Where once the people walked through wide open doors to hear the Gospel of Christ, now that same church finds those doors shutting. In many cases, these doors are shutting in a literal way as churches close at an alarming rate. But in even more situations, the doors are closing in a figurative way. Even though they have tried very hard to keep the church open to the community, fewer and fewer people from outside seem to be coming in.
Stories abound about how churches are experiencing this door-closing phenomenon. These stories go deeper than statistics or abstract descriptions about what is going on in the church in America. These are personal stories about love for God and love for God’s church. Over the last decade we have been working with these churches, helping them take steps to a new future.
After sharing a few stories of doors closing, Tieman — who is the president of Transforming Churches Network — and his team spend the remainder of the book sharing ideas and insights on how your church can open its doors to many in your community. These ideas are based on real-world examples from churches across America. By following the practices shared in Hinges, your church will reap a harvest in your community.
